As early as possible in the morning as, if the patient is prone to oedema, the leg will swell during the day. Or consider elevating the leg for 30 minutes prior to measuring.
Standing for thigh measurement; sitting or standing for calf and ankle. If sitting, knee should be flexed to 90 degrees and foot on the floor.
Thigh: 5cm below the groin on the thigh
Calf: at widest part of the calf
Ankle: at thinnest part of the ankle, just above the ankle bone
Foot: back of heel to end of the longest toe
If a long foot fits into size” large” but the ankle and calf fit size “small”, an open toed small is the appropriate size.
If wearing hosiery at night (maximum 7 nights), an open toe allows checking on toes for colour changes
Application of anti-fungal products to the toes can be applied if wearing open toe hosiery
For hygiene purposes - especially in the summer.
Patients with oedema in the toes may benefit from a closed toe style
If patient has weakness (fallen arches) in foot which gives a lot of movement in footwear, closed toe may be more suitable
Patient preference should be taken into account
For most conditions a below knee is as effective as the longer thigh length.
Many patients find a below knee easier to put on and wear.
Swollen or arthritic knees tend to be more comfortable in thigh length hosiery.
Thigh length is suitable for patients with painful or protruding varicose veins at the back of the knee.
Activa British Standard thigh length needs a suspender belt.
ActiLymph thigh length has a self-supporting grip top.
Patient preference should be taken into account.
Tights are available, but not on FP10/GP10
Actico bandages are for healing leg ulcers and reducing oedema in mobile and immobile patients.
Once ulcers have healed and/or the limb volume has been reduced, then compression hosiery should be worn to prevent reoccurrence and maintain limb shape
ActiLymph hosiery should prevent the swelling/leg ulcer returning if the limb was swollen before treatment.
Activa British Standard helps prevent leg ulcer reoccurrence in non oedematous limbs.
For patients who do not fit into standard sizes, bespoke stockings can be made.
ActiLymph MadeToMeasure hosiery is for limbs which had oedema before treatment.
Activa British Standard MadeToMeasure is for limbs which had no swelling pre-treatment. Both ranges are available on FP10.
The class the patient requires is dependent on a full, holistic assessment of the wearer. Local guidelines may influence the choice.
