Esther's Story

In the Spring of 2019, Esther, L&R Regional Clinical Advisor for the South, returned to Mvumi Hospital, Tanzania, to support a wound care clinic for the second year running.

The community wound care clinic was based in Mvumi Hospital where Esther spent time with the local staff and supported the clinic by providing nursing expertise as well as materials to help ease some of the burden. Locals were able to attend free of charge and receive free treatment where normally patients had to pay for their own wound care. With little money, training or equipment, the hospital staff often struggled to give the optimum level of care.

Many local people live with chronic wounds for over 10 years, and assume that they will never recover.

Esther and her team were able to change this mindset and prove that this doesn’t need to be the case - restoring hope and normality for many patients.

Many patients were guided onto the path towards healing, some patients were referred onto different hospital departments because of the extremity of their condition, and some patients returned from the previous year. Here are some examples of the wounds Esther and her team treated:

Esther’s fundraising for the clinic exceeded expectations which meant more money could be spent on supporting the hospital. The money raised paid for every patients’ treatment, pain relief, and surgery within the wound care clinic.

It even paid for the course fees for two nurse anaesthetists so that the theatre can be better supported and equipped for future years.

Thank you to everyone that donated to this amazing cause.

L&R are proud to support Esther and to make a difference by transforming patients’ lives.
