Practice nurses tell us treating venous leg ulcers using bandaging can be challenging and time-consuming. With the help of Activa and ActiLymph leg ulcer hosiery kits from L&R, you can have the confidence to treat leg ulcers safely, effectively and with lower rates of recurrence.
Designed specifically as first-line of treatment for patients with venous leg ulcers (VLUs) that have low to moderate wound exudate and minimal limb distortion, L&R's hosiery kits comprise two thin compression layers - a silky 10mmHg liner plus a top higher compression stocking, both worn below the knee.
The two layers can be worn continuously until the wound is healed. Patients can then be prescribed appropriate maintenance compression hosiery for ongoing vascular and lymphatic support to prevent ulcer recurrence.
For healthcare practitioners: Not only are the hosiery kits easy to apply, they also allow patients and carers to manage lower limb skin care between appointments.
For patients: Hosiery kits look like normal hosiery and crucially, they allow the patient to wear normal shoes and clothes, and continue to have freedom of movement.
The 2014 VenUS IV randomised controlled trial indicated that two-layer hosiery kits were as effective at healing venous leg ulcers as four-layer compression bandages. The trial included 453 patients over 32 UK centres.
It concluded that hosiery kits also offer important benefits, including:
The VenUS IV study noted that patients healed with a two-layer hosiery kit would be more likely to accept hosiery for maintenance therapy following their treatment, helping to reduce the rate of VLU recurrence.
|Two layer hosiery kits||Four layer bandages|
|Median time to healing||99 days||98 days|
|Proportion of ulcers healing||70.9%||70.4%|
|Mean annual cost||£1,493.90||£1,795.30|
|Ulcer recurrence rate||14%||23%|
Findings from the Venous Leg Ulcer Study IV: a randomised controlled trial. NB The Activa Leg Ulcer Hosiery kits were used in this trial. 230 patients in the two-layer hosiery group. 224 patients in the four-layer bandage group.
“Best of all, the pain disappeared and I could venture outside without worrying about that smell. I wish I’d been given the compression hosiery sooner. I’m so grateful to my nurse... as now my leg ulcer has gone and I’m back on my feet, back to my everyday life.”
43-year-old venous leg ulcer sufferer Helen
Hosiery kits are so easy to apply that patients and carers can manage lower limb skin care in between appointments.
Our demonstration video illustrates how easy it is to apply the Activa Leg Ulcer Hosiery Kit.
The following demonstrates an effective care pathway model for treating patients with venous leg ulcers.
Please note: Doppler ultrasound should always be used before applying compression.
